Presentation of the activities of ANCRAS, particularly in charge of the development of goat’s breeding of the local race Serrana.

ANCRAS (Associação Nacional de Caprinicultores da Raça Serrana) was established in 1990. This association aims to support the development of goat’s breeding of the local race Serrana and the promotion of its products (goat meat, milk and its derivatives).
ANCRAS represents, at the national level, about 215 goats breeders associated, with a total of 17 500 Serrana goats.

It is delegated by the Ministry of Agriculture to carry out management Stud book of the Serrana breed. In collaboration with other associations of northern and central regions, his team is responsible for the registration of births, registration in the Stud Book and milk control of goats.

Furthermore, the association has a technical advisory service for breeders on improved breeding management, the defense of economic interests of associated breeders, sanitary controls, the animals’ welfare and professional training of breeders.

Serrana breed is the one that has the largest number of animals among the six native goat breeds in Portugal. This is a goat middle structure with a weight of 35-50 kg.

Type of breeding varies according to the region and, therefore, of the ecotype. So, in the North, type of breeding is very traditional, with an average of 80 heads by flock. Pasture in the mountains and marginal lands are the main food source.

Milking is made manually, morning and evening. However, mechanical milking equipment begins to be used more and more, but they are still few. Milk production’s average of Transmontano, Ribatejano and Jarmelista ecotypes is described in the following table:

 The main breeding production is milk, which is fully processed into cheese, but the production of goat meat is also an important part of farm income. In the North, the Transmontano goat’s kid is an AOC product.
The transformation of goat's milk is made in a dairy farm. The transformation product is the Transmontano Goat Cheese (AOC): this is a cheese semi-hard to hard, matured for at least two months.

To improve the reproductive efficiency of goats’ flocks in breeding season or in non-breeding season, and also the quality of its products, the association is regularly involved in research and development projects with several domestic and foreign entities, as the European research project FP7-FLOCK REPROD.

The achievement of the objectives will allow breeders to improve their income, particularly through a better distribution of births during the year, the increase in the number of kids in non-breeding season and the improvement of the quality of milk and its cheese output. Finally, the modernization of breeding systems and the increase of the profitability of goat farms will make the activity more attractive and more sustainable.
