MAY 2011 - Capgenes, French goats genetics. Organism and Enterprise of Selection which brings together 18 cooperatives or associations of cooperatives.

Presentation of the project coordinator

Capgenes is the unique national semen production center and it is the only goat semen production center complying with the European agreement standards.
Further more, Capgenes runs the French breeding program for genetic improvement of dairy goats (Alpine and Saanen breeds) which is approved by the French Ministery of Agriculture.

Capgenes' missions

Goats breeds orientation

  • Definition of the objectives for the French goat breeding program,
  • Goats qualification,
  • Management of the national goat data base,
  • Pedigree.

Semen production

  • Performance test on the young bucks in station,
  •  Responsible for the progeny testing program,
  • Production of frozen semen for A.I. on goats,
  • Cryo-storage of disappearing goats breeds.

Coordination of the French goats selection program

  • Planned matings for the breeding program,
  • Goats type scoring,
  • Analysis of the progress enabled by the breeding program,
  • Advice in selection for goat breeders,
  • Training for goat selection.

Training and promotion

  • Training of French and foreign technicians on A.I.,
  • French goats breeds and goats genetic improvement promotion,
  • Promotion of goats born from the breeding program,
  • International development: semen export, technical cooperation and support, provision of a service abroad, skills exchanges in goat selection and promotion on goats A.I. in foreign countries in collaboration with SERSIA France.

Research
- In collaboration with INRA and the Institut de l'Elevage, experiments such as FLOCK-REPROD run:

  • For improvement of goat reproduction:
    • Semen production and cryo-storage,
    • The dairy goats fertility improvement after artificial insemination,
    • And embryo production and cryo-storage.
  • For improvement of goat selection:
    • Alpha S1 caseines,
    • Milking speed, etc.

- Research and genetic innovation for goats breeding.
